BASF has traded in China since 1885. Today, it is one of the leading foreign investors in the Chinese chemical industry and employs over 6,000 people here. The company currently operates 23 wholly owned subsidiaries and 10 joint ventures in Greater China. In 2007, BASF achieved sales of about €4.4 billion in Greater China. BASF started its first subsidiary in Hong Kong, BASF China Ltd., in 1982. This company is responsible for sales, marketing and distribution of imported and locally manufactured products in Hong Kong and China. The holding company, BASF (China) Co., Ltd. was founded in 1996 to integrate all BASF operations in China. It acts as sales agent and distributor, as well as a corporate service provider for joint ventures. Across the straits, BASF started doing business in Taiwan over half a century ago. BASF Taiwan Ltd., established in 1969, has a processing factory for pre-mixed nutrition additives for animal feed. BASF's core businesses in Greater China include petrochemicals, polymer dispersions, polystyrene, polyurethanes, engineering plastics, coatings, performance products for the textile and leather industries, intermediates, catalysts, and construction chemicals.
